Women across the world are subjected to physical, sexual, psychological and economic violence, regardless of their income, age or education. Such violence can lead to longterm physical, mental and emotional health problems.
United Nations data indicates that over one-third of women worldwide have experienced physical and/or sexual violence by an intimate partner or sexual violence by a nonpartner at some point in their lives (United Nations, 2015).
Violence and sexual assaults can occur anywhere and at anytime, and often in environments where women and children may feel the safest, such as their own homes or offices. According to the Pan African Medical Journal (2016), in Lagos alone, 48.5% of assault cases occurred in the assailant’s home or office, 19.9% of cases in the victim’s home, 11.2% on a street corner and 10.7% in an uncompleted building.
A 2013 WHO report concluded that “violence against women is not a new phenomenon, nor are its consequences to women’s physical, mental and reproductive health.
What is new is the growing recognition that acts of violence against women are not isolated events but rather form a pattern of behaviour that violates the rights of women and girls, limits their participation in society, and damages their health and well-being”.
70.9% of all cases were committed by one assailant and in these instances, PSD’s can prove effective in helping to prevent violent and sexual assault.
